The beauty of an old-fashioned design
or homey phrase has become the successful career and continually growing
business of Stacy West. Stacy’s love of handwork has evolved from
prize-winning woodcrafts sold at craft fairs to becoming the featured artist in
publications. Her unique designs in embroidery, wool applique, rug hooking and
punchneedle are published by her company, Buttermilk Basin.
For Stacy, this has always been a family affair. Growing up near Roseau she had not only her mom but aunts and grandmother to show her the way. Her mom continues to play an important role in the business, helping out with embroidering and stitching samples. And now the next generation, Stacy’s daughters Hannah and Grace, are getting old enough to keep the cycle going. As you look at the Buttermilk Basin designs, you may get the feeling that they are antiques. This is accomplished through a well planned process. Most projects are stitched on Osnaburg fabric with DMC floss, then tea dyed, and then further embellished with wool. The DMC colors take on a dullness and often looks hand-dyed. Punchneedle embroidery is another medium that fits in well with everything else. Stacy’s patterns run the range from pictures to home dÈcor to small quilts. The projects are well suited to beginners and experienced alike. Stacy also has a love of paper crafts and even has a line of rubber stamps available through Inky Antics. She has found the design ideas in paper can often evolve into one of her handwork projects. Her patterns are sold all over the country, are carried in Keepsake Quilting catalog, and have appeared in well known magazines- Create and Decorate and Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publications. A quick look through the Buttermilk Basin pattern reveals that Halloween is Stacy’s favorite holiday theme- her Halloween embroidered quilt is wonderful! Now celebrating 10 years of business, there is no slowing down. New ideas and plans are constantly changing, bringing more fun for all of us. Stacy will be bringing a trunk show to Bear Patch on Saturday, May 3, and you will have the pleasure of visiting with her and learn just how much she loves her work. Warning: you will be inspired! | |
